Platteland

Dust jacket shot by dealer
I collect books, mainly in two genres – African wildlife and photography. I was rather pleased when I was able to source a mint copy of Roger Ballen’s ‘Platteland’, a book described by Susan Sontag as:
‘…an altogether extraordinary book, the most impressive sequence of portraits I’ve seen in years. Roger Ballen has used the power of photography to instruct, to shock, and to discomfit with an exemplary integrity of purpose’.
It really is an exceptional book and the most I’ve ever paid for a single item in my collection. I can’t wait to get it.
Check out Roger Ballen’s website to see more of his work.

Pimp My Ride

I’ve now got a Think Tank Airport International 2.0. I somehow feel like my bag has been pimped, look at those alloys. I don’t get excited about camera gear, I get more excited about what it can enable and this enables me to walk upright again. Aaah….

I started this post and then Safari helpfully crashed before I had chance to even save a draft. One is not amused. Anyway, I’ve decided to make a concerted effort to share more on photography and considered I actually have a corporate tax return to do for my business, I thought in an act of masterful procrastination, now is as good a time as any to start said initiative.
I like trees, it’s hard not to when you come from a part of the world which is home to iconic trees such as Msasas, Baobabs and Acacias. I enjoyed Magnum photographer Stuart Franklin’s piece in Time Magazine entitled ‘In the Time of Trees’. Franklin is the photographer who took the iconic photograph of the student protester facing down a line of tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
It actually reminds me of a link I saw a while ago on Kottke.org entitled ‘10 Most Magnificent Trees’.
I’ve been a fan of Corey Arnold’s photography ever since I saw his website and I came across an interesting NPR interview which is worth checking out.
